Princeton University, Sherrerd Hall
Immediately following another collaboration with the architecture firm Frederick Fishers & Partners, the IST building at Caltech, we were lured to their next project in Princeton, New Jersey, but this time on a much faster track. We were charged with creating a signage and wayfinding system for the nearly-complete Sherrerd Hall, a new building that houses the Center for Information Technology Policy and Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering on Princeton’s campus. The poetically simple glass box says a lot about the industries of its high-tech tenants inside: It’s simultaneously about reflection and transparency. We were drawn to the exterior glass and its distinctive frit pattern, which became the starting place for the pattern we adapted to the signage. Overall, it’s a study in understated simplicity.
