Panettone not Pantone
December 15th, 2008
When it first appeared in the shops right around Halloween it was like seeing Christmas lights in October; it’s just too early. Which is a good thing, because if we’d started eating it then we’d have been Billy Bunter size by Christmas Day. But now…well, ’tis the season and we’re well into it. Panettone Milanese is its full and proper name, and it’s an Italian fruitcake that just melts in your mouth. It’s brilliant with our afternoon tea, and brilliant with a glass of Prosecco after work, and if we’re busy well, we may even have some in lieu of a proper lunch. Our local complete food shop has their own brand which we found a little dry. However, a visit to nearby Bay City Imports revealed the holy grail: a Tre Marie cake that brought us to our knees. We’re on our second loaf. Buono Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo.
